I’ve always thought that I don’t have time for exercise. The truth is (like many other things) it was an excuse. I’ve managed to get out of the office and walk three days this week. Not because all of a sudden I have free time. It’s because I’ve made a point to do it. This afternoon I finished up a draft for a piece of a large project that just hit my desk. It was 4:15pm. Old me would have said “it’s so close to 5, do something at home.” New me said “take 5 freaking minutes and go outside.” And it was wonderful. I only walked for about 15 minutes but it felt so much better than sitting at my desk. I get sucked into my work. It’s good to have long stretches of focused time, but I need those breaks too.
When I got home I decided to work out with the boys a little too. We put on the dance episode of Yo Gabba Gabba and went to town. I had forgotten what it feels like to skip around the room. Even these short bursts of movement change the rest of my day. I feel good that I went out and did something for myself. Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve. I’ve already set my resolution. I want to see this running head start blaze through the next year.
